Cleaning a chain safely begins with knowing whether it is solid gold, plated, vermeil, filled or simply gold-tone. The wrong cleaner can damage finishes, stones or soldered components.
Start gently
Use a soft lint-free cloth to remove surface oils. For suitable plain solid-gold jewellery, mild soapy water is commonly used, but delicate construction, gemstones and plated finishes require more caution.
Avoid abrasive polishing
Abrasives can remove metal and can quickly damage thin plating. Do not use household scouring products, toothpaste or harsh chemicals.
Dry completely
Moisture trapped around clasps and links can leave residue. Pat dry rather than pulling a fine chain through a cloth.
When to ask a jeweller
Use a professional for valuable chains, pieces with stones, unknown construction or damage. Cleaning is also a good opportunity to have worn clasps and links inspected.
