Weight is one of the most useful specifications when comparing gold chains, but grams only make sense alongside purity, length, width and construction.
Why weight changes price
All else equal, a heavier genuine-gold chain contains more alloy and usually costs more. Retail price also includes manufacturing, design, branding, distribution and margin.
Why equal widths can weigh differently
Link geometry and hollow construction can create large weight differences between chains that appear similar in photographs.
Purity matters
A 20 g 9ct chain and a 20 g 18ct chain contain different amounts of pure gold. Do not compare gram weight without fineness.
Use weight to spot inconsistencies
An unusually low stated weight for a very thick “solid” chain is a reason to inspect the construction description carefully. Weight is a clue, not proof of authenticity.
- Fineness: for example 375, 585 or 750.
- Total gram weight.
- Length.
- Width.
- Solid or hollow construction.
Those five fields make price comparisons far more meaningful than photographs alone.
