The same chain can look completely different at 2 mm and 8 mm, or at 45 cm and 60 cm. Use measurements rather than product photos alone.

Length changes placement

Shorter chains sit closer to the base of the neck; longer chains drop further onto the chest. Body size, neck circumference, clothing and pendant use all affect the result. Measure an existing chain you like before buying.

Length Typical starting point Common use
18 in / 46 cm Close to the neck on many men Neat, shorter look
20 in / 51 cm Upper chest / collarbone area Versatile everyday length
22 in / 56 cm Lower on the upper chest Relaxed chain styling
24 in / 61 cm Further down the chest Pendants and statement chains

For Cuban links specifically, pair this length choice with the width table in our Cuban link chain size guide.

Width changes presence

Fine widths are subtle and often better suited to small pendants. Mid-width chains have more visual presence without dominating an outfit. Very wide Cuban and curb chains become statement pieces and can be substantially heavier.

Do not compare width without weight

Two chains with the same width can differ greatly in weight because of length, link design and hollow versus solid construction. When comparing value, use the complete specification.

Pendant compatibility

Check that the pendant bail fits over the chain and that the chain is appropriately strong for the pendant. The clasp can sometimes be wider than the chain itself.
