Gold chain size is a combination of length, width and weight. The same style can look completely different at 2 mm and 8 mm, or at 18 inches and 24 inches. Use actual measurements rather than judging scale from close-up product photography.
Gold chain length: 18, 20, 22 or 24 inches?
Length determines where the chain sits. Neck circumference, body size, clothing and pendant use all change the result, so measure an existing chain you like or use a piece of cord before ordering.

How to measure a gold chain
Lay an existing chain flat and measure it end to end, including the clasp. If you are choosing a new length, place a soft tape or cord around your neck at the position where you want the chain to sit, then measure that length. Do not rely on a model photograph because neck and body proportions vary.

Width and weight are not the same thing
Two 5 mm chains can have very different gram weights because of length, link geometry and whether the links are solid or hollow. Compare the stated gram weight alongside width. Choosing a chain for a pendant
Check both the chain width and the pendant bail opening. The bail must pass over the chain and often over the clasp as well. A very fine chain can also look visually unbalanced with a large pendant.
